The trick to adjusting your bike saddle in 3 steps

A good cyclist knows that having the bike saddle  well-adjusted is a key factor when you’re out on the road. bad posture on the bike – riding too high or too low – can lead to injury. That’s why in this article we tell you the trick to adjust your bike saddle in 3 easy steps. Once again, with the help of Toni Bravo, our technical specialist.

1. The importance of a good fit

As we have already mentioned, a well-adjusted saddle is important to avoid injuries. If we go too high, we cause a hyperextension that can lead to pain in the popliteus or in the back of the knee. On the other hand, if the saddle is too low, we can injure the front of the knee, the hips or the lower back.

So what is the ideal saddle size?

The ideal measurement is achieved when the knee is practically straight at the bottom of the pedal, without reaching full extension. But how can we make sure that we place the saddle in the correct size? According to biomechanical studies (those that study the physiological conditions of the cyclist with respect to the mechanics of the bike), the correct position of the saddle is 88% of the length of our inner thigh.

Let’s measure ourselves!

2. Step by Step

This trick for adjusting your bike saddle is very simple. All you need is a book or a magazine and a tape measure. Have you got them? Let’s do it.

Step 1

Stand with your back to the wall, barefoot and straight. Now put the book or magazine right in your inner thigh. Stand away from the wall holding the book in the crotch position and measure the distance to the floor.

Step 2

Multiply the result obtained by 0.88 (this way we will get the measurement corresponding to the 88% of the crotch mentioned above). And with this measure, it’s time to move it to the bike.

Step 3

With the same tape measure and the measurement at hand, measure the distance from the centre of the bottom bracket to the highest point of the saddle. Please note that you have to take this measurement parallel to the frame and seat post. The resulting distance has to be the one you have calculated above!

If we go too high or too low, we will have to adjust the seat post height to get the correct measurement.

3. Conclusions

Now you know the trick to adjusting your bike saddle. Three simple steps that will help you avoid injuries caused by wearing the saddle too high or too low. Easy, isn’t it? Then you just need to get your bike, get equipped and go out on your route. And enjoy!
