The 5 essential tools for cycling
Going out on a bike, having a breakdown and not having the right tools necessary to fix it. Has it ever happened to you? These mishaps happen and the worst thing that can happen is that we have to be picked up. To avoid this, it is important to know some essential tools for cycling.
With the help of Toni Bravo, technical specialist at Deporvillage, we bring you the 5 basics for mountain biking. A series of tools that can get us out of more than one trouble and that we should always carry with us when we go out cycling.
1. Multitool
The first essential, the multi-tool. There are more basic and more complete ones, but a simple one will be enough. The important thing is that you carry: universal Allen keys, different types of screwdrivers and some kind of knife or razor. In this way, we will be able to fix small faults and adjust some components.
2. Chain braid
Another basic, especially in the mountains: the chain tool. This is used when breakdowns are more common and allows us to reattach the chain in the event of a breakage. In this case, we will also need to carry a quick link to be able to reattach it.
3. Spare inner tubes, pumps and tyre levers
Another set of accessories that we cannot miss: a spare tube, a hand pump and some tyre levers (in case we find a puncture in the middle of the mountain). There are many reasons that can cause us to get a puncture, even if we have tubeless tyres. Therefore, we can never be without these components.
And if you have them, a CO2 cartridge with a head will allow you to inflate the tyre more comfortably than the hand pump. The detachable ones, as you will know if you have ever changed the inner tube, are basic to do it.
4. Brake pads
Another item we recommend you take with you on your rides: a pair of brake pads. Useful for when we forget to check them at home and in the middle of the outing they have just worn out. We will also need a derailleur cable in case it breaks in the middle of the route.
5. Red rear light
And the last of the essential tools for cycling, the red rear light. It is important to always go out with one of them as a safety accessory. In this way, we will gain visibility in low light or if we do a stretch of road.
Conclusions
Having small breakdowns on our bike rides will not be a big inconvenience if we have the right tools . And even if some of them we don’t know how to use them, having them at hand is essential in case we meet a cyclist who can give us a hand.
