The 2024 edition presents a major novelty compared to previous editions. For the first time, the route will run in the opposite direction, crossing the Pyrenees from east to west.
Yesterday, Wednesday 24th January in the afternoon, we experienced a new very interesting meeting in our store Deporvillage Alcorcón. On this occasion we met the organisers and sponsors of the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast, one of the most epic races on the Spanish cycling calendar, which will be held from the 9th to 15th June and of which we are sponsors for the third consecutive year.
At seven o’clock in the evening we all met at the bike fitting space where Oriol Sallent, the race director, was waiting for us together with Llorenç Solé to give us all the details of the 2024 edition of this epic challenge in which cyclists from all over the world are taking part.
The presentation began with the projection of the promotional video of the race, a motivational and inspirational short film that shows some of the most beautiful landscapes that the participants will be able to enjoy; and the good vibes and happiness that the cyclists feel when they live the experience. The Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast is a sporting adventure that pushes participants to their sporting and mental limits. 7 days of pure cycling through surprisingly beautiful scenery and with many hours of riding for which you have to be mentally prepared.
The aim of the talk was to present the cycling event in order to motivate and spread the word about it. Oriol told us about the main novelty of this edition: the change in the direction of the race which, for the first time in history, will start in Roses and finish in Saint Jean de Luz. Until now, the race has always started on the Cantabrian coast taking the cyclists to the Mediterranean with seven stages crossing the Pyrenees passing through Oloron Sainte Marie, Vielha or Camprodon among others.
After explaining in detail each of the seven stages that make up the race, the main organiser of the race explained to us the different modalities in which we can participate. While the Gran Raid MTB is the classic event, which takes in the incredible trails and paths of the Pyrenees, road cyclists also find their place in the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast with the Backroads modality, which runs along some of the legendary roads of the territory. Finally, for electric bicycle users, the organisation has also prepared a specific modality in which they will find a route specially designed for them, the E-Transpyr.
Finally, we answered some of the questions from the audience:
Do you have to have a high level to participate in the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast?
Oriol stressed that one has to bear in mind that this is one of the most demanding adventure races, so yes, you have to have a certain level of cycling. However, what is very important is to be mentally prepared for a multi-stage race of this level of physical demand. In the end we find ourselves with a route of more than 750km and 18,000 metres of positive height gain, in only 7 stages.
Could we make it shorter?
Of course! The organisation has thought of people who do not have so many days of holiday or for those who want to make a first approach to this type of event. For this reason, it has prepared the “WEST” and “EAST” modalities that allow you to enjoy half of the stages: the EAST takes you from Roses to Vielha in 3 stages; or the “WEST” takes you from Vielha to Saint Jean de Luz in 4 stages. Everyone finds their place in the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast!
Is it too technical?
In response to this question Oriol remarked that “technical difficulty is not what will prevent a participant from finishing the race”. Although there are sections that are more technically demanding, they can easily be overcome on foot. Most of the route is on 100% cyclable tracks.
At the end of the event the attendees received a deporvillage bag and a finisher bottle and had the opportunity to share experiences and exchange opinions during the snack break that we prepared.
If you are a cyclist looking for a challenge that will push you to your limits, the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast is YOUR event! 750 km with more than 18,000 m of positive height gain in seven days that will take you across the Pyrenees from sea to sea.
