How to avoid injuries during the season

Often, we all think that the key to a successful season is based on training, training and more training… focused on our goals; forgetting the rest and working to avoid injuries derived from the hours on the bike are just as important.

When we talk about avoiding injuries on the bike, we must approach the subject from two perspectives: first, the posture on the bike; and second, the cyclist’s health.

1. Posture on the bike

As for the first perspective, the position we hold on the bicycle, this is a question addressed by biomechanics. The idea is to try to ensure that our posture on the bike is not harmful. That is, that we do not have joints that suffer pressure or work outside their ranges of motion.

It is also important to take ergonomics into account: avoid overloading or poor positioning on the bike. For this, it is best to have it analysed by a biomechanist, a physiotherapist or even a podiatrist.

2. Cyclist health

On the other hand, the cyclist’s health is of vital importance. Therefore, it is useful to practise exercises that help us to avoid injuries on the bicycle.

Stretching is essential, just as it is essential that all muscles have their optimal range of motion. For this, two activities that usually work very well are Pilates and yoga. Both modalities seek to work on angles of movement and stretching.

Finally, keep in mind that visits to the physiotherapist, osteopath … and respect the hours of rest for recovery after training, are very important.
