Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast, ¿ready for adventure?

What cyclist has never dreamed of riding through the Pyrenees and climbing some of its most impressive mountains? With more than 400 km between the Cantabrian Sea and the Mediterranean, the Pyrenees offer the perfect setting for an unforgettable cycling adventure. And so, we will do it in the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast, are you ready for the adventure?

An unforgettable week in the Pyrenees

The Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast consists of seven stages, linking the two seas. The first three stages and a good part of the fourth stage are entirely in the French Pyrenees, before entering the Catalan Pyrenees on the fourth day through the Aran Valley. Starting in Saint Jean de Luz, this first part of the Transpyr reaches the towns of Saint Jean Pied de Port, Oloron Sainte Marie and Bagnères de Bigorre. The first three stages increase in distance and elevation gain as the route enters the Parc National des Pyrénées. Once we enter the Catalan Pyrenees, we first stop in Viella, the end point of the fourth stage, and then continue on to La Seu d’Urgell on the fifth day, Camprodón on the sixth day, finishing in Roses, facing the Mediterranean, on the seventh and last day of the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast.

A major challenge

It only takes a few simple calculations to realise what a sporting challenge Transpyr is. The riders will have to face, during one week, an average of 107 km per day and 2500 m of accumulated positive altitude gain for the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast Gran Raid MTB and 142 km and 2800 m of accumulated positive altitude gain in the case of the Deporvillage Transpyr Backroads.

The time limits set by the organisers are sufficiently long to be able to complete the stages at an average speed of 10 km/h in the case of the Gran Raid MTB and 12 km/h for the Backroads. However, the physical preparation required is high, and for this reason it will be necessary to have planned the previous months, introducing specific training for this type of event, such as long outings lasting several hours and consecutive training sessions at different intensities to get our body used to managing the accumulated fatigue load.

Ready for the adventure

Every morning, at the starting line where the riders gather, the atmosphere is filled with the nerves of those who are about to embark on a journey they will always remember. Perhaps they review the route card and the day’s altimetries provided by the organisers, or they assess their strength in the face of the challenges of the stage. The riders at the start line should have done their homework well and have everything they need to tackle the adventure.

The refreshment posts are strategically placed so that approximately every 20 to 30 km you will find a point where you can have something to eat and refill your water bottles. But it is highly recommended that you carry some snack with you, e.g., isotonic gels or energy bars. Stages can be very long and we may need extra energy at any time. A bar or gel at the right time can save you from the dreaded “hitting the wall” effect when sudden fatigue kicks in.

And let’s not forget that, although the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast is held in June, in the Pyrenees we can find low temperatures and very changeable weather and therefore it is highly recommended to carry a good waterproof jacket in case of rain or cold. Thanks to the Transpyr Bag we can include various types of accessories in our luggage, such as leg warmers, arm warmers, vests or windbreakers, and choose the most suitable clothing for each day according to the weather forecast.

In a seven-day event in which we will spend many hours on the bike, prudence is a virtue that benefits the finisher. On technical sections or descents, it is necessary to be extremely careful and it is not a bad idea to leave a safety margin so that we can anticipate any problems that may arise, especially in the Gran Raid MTB modality. In addition to avoiding accidents that could force us to abandon the race, by managing this safety margin it will be easier to take care of the mechanics and avoid punctures and damage to the bicycle.

Many options, one big adventure

Whatever the format chosen, they all share the same adventurous spirit. Crossing the Pyrenees, linking the Cantabrian coasts with the Mediterranean, even with the facilities and customisation options offered by the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast, is still an adventure reserved for cyclists who have prepared themselves adequately, both physically and mentally. The route profile gives an approximation in figures: kilometres, total ascent, percentages, but that’s not the whole story. Each mountain is a different experience. The type of surface, the temperature, the weather and the events of the day will shape a unique experience, even for the many riders have already done a Transpyr. And for mountain bikers, it is not only the climbs that are important. The Gran Raid MTB includes numerous technical descents, and some climbs as well, which will test your cycling skills.

In addition, in the Gran Raid MTB modality, each stage has timed sections that will awaken the most competitive side of the riders. And the effort is rewarded, as the top finishers in each category will be recognised at the end of each stage, including the leader’s jersey for the first classified, and also at a final ceremony at the finish in Roses.

It is no exaggeration to say that taking part in the Deporvillage Transpyr Coast to Coast is a life-changing challenge for whoever signs up and wins the coveted finisher’s jersey. The hours of training during the year, the selection and preparation of the right clothing, everything that the cyclist will do to be present at the start in Saint Jean de Luz will culminate in a week full of unrepeatable experiences. This is a pure cycling, but also a personal, even intimate, adventure that leads many cyclists to discover aspects of themselves they may have never known.
