Test: ASICS GEL-Nimbus™ 24 running shoes
The new GEL-Nimbus™ 24 running shoes from ASICS are lighter in weight and feature an even lighter FF BLAST™ PLUS midsole with a high cushioning capacity. They remain a benchmark for comfort and flexibility and are therefore a great choice for everyday training.
Lighter, more comfortable
The first impression when wearing the ASICS GEL-Nimbus™ 24 is one of extreme lightness and comfort. We start jogging and they seem to float above the ground. The latest version of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus™ goes even deeper into their well-known features: lightweight, excellent shock absorption and above all an incredibly soft underfoot feel.
The new features are a lower weight, no less than 30 grams, a lighter midsole foam (FF BLAST™ PLUS) with greater impulse capacity and more flexibility, and a redesign of the forefoot area that allows for more flex in the foot. In the sole, the amount of rubber has been reduced and the reinforcements in the outer area have disappeared, after they had already been reduced in size in version 22. This has undoubtedly contributed to the weight reduction, and also to making the tread more fluid, although it exposes more of the foam to wear and tear.
Thin tongue and cushioned heel
In the upper, the biggest novelty is the tongue, which is longer and thinner, although instead of a traditional tongue, what we have here is a kind of cover stitched on the sides. It is perforated and feels very light and elastic and helps to keep us cool in summer, although in colder seasons we may need a slightly thicker sock as this area will be very exposed. The mesh now has elongated perforations at the metatarsal level, making it appear lighter than it really is. In this area the flexibility has been improved, and although it is not a shoe for fast running or speed training, its reactivity has been improved, and it feels more playful.
The collar of the shoes is well padded and in the area of the lace eyelets, which are flat and quite long, there are some discreet rubber reinforcements which, together with the brand’s logo, improve the foot’s support.
Three layers with specific character
The secret to the comfort and softness of the Asics GEL-Nimbus™ 24 lies in their midsole, with the combination of the lightweight FF BLAST™ PLUS, the GEL™ in the heel and the FLYTEFOAM™ midsole layer providing the necessary stability. These three layers are fully visible in the heel, where the silicone gel somewhat moderates the extraordinary rebound capabilities of the shoe. If we look at the inner side of the shoe, at the level of the midfoot, we will see a blue piece that looks like silicone gel, but it is actually made of plastic. This is the Trusstic System, an arch support system that gives rigidity to the whole structure.
A shoe that eats up those kilometres
The small changes that ASICS has made to the GEL-Nimbus™ 24 are not radical, but rather accentuate the characteristics of this shoe with great cushioning and a soft underfoot feel. They still give us that feeling of stepping on a cushion, but now the cushioning is a bit more reactive, but still not the best for keeping high paces.
The changes in the upper and tongue make it more flexible and lighter, with a braided mesh with perforations in the forefoot that will better support flexion in the bunion area thanks to a higher density.
The recommendation is clear: this is a great shoe for daily trainings, to run a lot of kilometres knowing that its excellent cushioning will protect our joints at all times. It is also recommended for heavier runners or runners with little technique, or simply for long runs where comfort is our main concern.
